Women’s Business Center Internship

The Women’s Business Center (“WBC”) provides advising and workshops to women owned and aspiring businesses in Maine. The programming was developed based on research from over two decades ago.  While the programming is fine-tuned and adjusted each year, CEI feels we are at a critical moment to really serve women entrepreneurs in a different way than other service providers.

Project Summary: The summer intern would conduct secondary research and survey our existing and potential clients to create a program that meets current needs and is recognized as the “go to” service for female entrepreneurs.

Through this project, the summer intern will gain survey design, research and interview skills.  They would work on verbal and written communication both as part of the research, and internally when synthesizing results.   Because the work is specific to female entrepreneurship, the student will gain knowledge of small business ownership and how it plays a role in the economy.  They will also learn about the barriers faced by women entrepreneurs, and the inspiring ways these barriers are overcome.

The data and results will be used inform WBC programming.  It will be used to inform our WBC (and other CEI staff) about the current state of women in entrepreneurship: and the barriers that they face both generally and also locally.  It will inform our training offerings, as well as inform our advising work.  This work will help make sure that the WBC stays relevant, builds our programming around client needs and input, and truly stands out from other entrepreneurial service providers.
