Nestled in the pristine waters of Robinhood Cove on Georgetown Island, Eros Oyster specializes in slow-growing Atlantic Oysters. Their company’s growth shows how traditional aquaculture can evolve to meet changing market demands while maintaining the highest quality.

Here is Eros Oyster’s story in co-owner Michael Edward Gaffney’s words:  

Describe your business in one sentence:

We’re a family-owned oyster farm offering premium Maine oysters and immersive aquaculture tourism experiences.

What unique perspective/skills do you bring to your business?

My academic background helps me create engaging, educational tours that help visitors understand the science and culture of oyster farming, while maintaining rigorous quality standards in our production.

What has been the greatest challenge you’ve faced in starting or running your business?

Managing the complexities of a family-owned business can be difficult, but we support each other through the challenges.

What has been your greatest business triumph so far?

Two-time winner of Maine Oyster of the Year!

Where do you see your business in 3-5 years?

We hope to expand our tourism offerings, stabilize our core oyster business, and diversify our revenue streams to ensure long-term sustainability.

What advice would you give to aspiring business owners?

Take the leap and just do it!

Do you feel like you are serving a specific community or need?

Yes, we’re meeting growing consumer demand for authentic, educational experiences in food production and aquaculture.

Are you taking any steps to reduce your business’s carbon footprint?

We’ve significantly reduced our environmental impact by transitioning from gasoline-powered to electric equipment in our operations.
