Obtaining Your Credit Report

Your credit history is the record of how you have paid your debts. Information about you is compiled by three separate agencies, Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. Lenders and other organizations with a legitimate business need, including your employer, insurance agent or landlord, can access this report.

Each of the three credit agencies may include slightly different information and mistakes are often made. For this reason, it is important to check your report from all three. You can order a report from each of them by writing a letter including:

  • Full name, including middle initial, and suffix, i.e. Jr., Sr., if applicable. Include any previous names you may have held (as in a previous marriage, for example).
  • Address(es) for the last three years
  • Social Security Number
  • Date of birth
  • Home and/or daytime telephone number
  • Signature
  • Copy of your driver's license or utility bill with your name and address
  • Copy of your denial letter if obtaining a free report

You are entitled to a free report if:

  • You are unemployed and plan to seek employment within 60 days
  • You are a recipient of public welfare assistance
  • You believe your report is inaccurate due to fraud
  • You have been denied credit, insurance, or employment or had other adverse action taken based upon a credit report within the last 60 days.

Your letters should be sent separately to each of the three credit bureaus.
