Licenced Practical Nurse Training PDF Print E-mail

The Heath Care Options classes comprised the foundation courses necessary to prepare individuals to transition into select health care jobs or to an accredited health care training program.  The courses were delivered through the Community College System and offered at satellite locations, namely adult and community education centers.  This strategy broadened the accessibility for workers who lived throughout two rural counties in Maine. The classes included Elements of Math, Anatomy & Physiology, Computer Literacy, and College Composition.

Those who were already working in the health sector completed a second round of courses; they only had to take the nursing course to complete the program and subsequently get licensed.  Almost 90% of the students completed the program and entered employment at $____________, a wage replacement rate of__________%.

Licenced Practical Nurse Training Success

Amy LeBlanc is a health care worker from the rural town of Canaan, Maine. The sole wage earner for her family of four, she has more than 11 years of experience in the health care field, working most recently as a mental health rehab technician at a residential facility for developmentally delayed adults. Despite her experience, Amy does not earn enough to support her family, and has to rely on food stamps and health coverage through the MaineCare program.

Now, thanks to the Health Careers program of the Progressive Alliance for Careers & Training PACT) Project and CEI, Amy is studying to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The average direct care worker may expect wages to increase by as much as 50 percent (from $9.37 per hour to $14.04) after receiving a practical nurse license. When she graduates from Kennebec Valley Community College's accredited nursing program, Amy plans to work as an LPN in a skilled unit at a long-term care facility, where she anticipates increased earnings and the chance to build her financial assets. LPN training is the first step toward Amy's goal of becoming a Registered Nurse.
