Northern New England Leadership, Education, Advocacy for Direct-Care and Support Staff PDF Print E-mail

Northern New England LEADS Institute, established in January 2005, offers training and support to front-line caregivers providing long-term care services in health care facilities in Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.  Sponsored by the Paraprofessional Healthcare Institute, in partnership with Coastal Enterprises, Inc., the Muskie School of Public Service, Community of Vermont Elders, New Hampshire Community Loan Fund, and Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire, demonstration projects will be established in Maine through 2007.  CEI coordinates Maine's project activities and participates on PHI's three-state team, designing the evaluation in collaboration with an external evaluator.

What will the Northern New England LEADS Institute provide? The institute will do three things:

Training.  Bring "best practice" expertise into northern New England—training front-line staff, their supervisors and administrators, on strategies ranging from improved entry-level training and problem-solving skills, to non-punitive supervision and consumer-focused caregiving practices. PHI will deliver this training both on-site within health care facilities, and in regional seminars.

Network of Support.  Introduce these local leaders to one another across the region, creating a leadership network of front-line staff who can teach and support one another.

Public Education.  Bring the stories of these front-line staff to the public, helping northern New England families, their loved ones, and their political leaders understand the great fortune we have in being cared for by such skilled and giving staff.
