CEI Staffing Services, Inc.

Mission: To create employment opportunities for diverse populations with barriers to employment, especially those with low incomes, through innovative services aimed at meeting the human resources needs of employers and job seekers.

CEI Staffing Services, Inc. (CSSI) is a nonprofit subsidiary of Coastal Enterprises, Inc. (CEI) and offers an array of human resources and employment programs creating partnerships between CSSI and businesses throughout southern Maine that benefit individuals with barriers to employment. CSSI provides programs and assistance to people that offer both transitional employment and access to competitive full and/or part-time jobs. CSSI serves as a liaison to community-based organizations that provide supportive services. Our goal is to make  employment opportunities and support services available to individuals that assist them in fulfilling their personal and career goals.

CSSI operates a staffing service known as Managed Work Services™. Like many temporary agencies, CSSI contracts with businesses to fill high turnover entry-level positions. Unlike other temp agencies, CSSI hires people that have a difficult time breaking into the job market. People with disabilities, non-English speakers, those receiving public assistance, and the homeless can find work through CSSI.

Transforming Work

The bottle room at Hannaford Brothers' Forest Avenue store gets very hectic. Maine's busiest supermarket processes more than a thousand returnables every day.

It can be tough keeping up with the constant flow of plastic, aluminum, and glass, but Charlie Wass is a hard worker. He arrives on time, follows directions, and gets the job done. When Charlie's day is over, he likes to "feel he's done as much as he can". Charlie doesn't work for Hannaford, though. He is an employee of CEI Staffing Services, Inc. (CSSI), a new nonprofit CEI subsidiary.
Working
As a person with a disability, Charlie wasn't often given opportunities to grow in previous jobs. With the support of his CSSI job coach, Charlie is trying new things--fixing machines, using the computer and even helping customers. Charlie has grown so much at Hannaford that he plans to apply for a permanent job.

And, perhaps try bagging.
