National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) is a Washington, DC based 25 year grant-maker in support of conservation activities. They chose CEI to design an investment strategy which would complement their grants to sustainable fisheries businesses and organizations. CEI is using its debt and equity financing experience to produce an efficient business plan tailored to NFWF’s mission and the characteristics of the sector. The project runs to the fall of 2014.
We propose a national coalition of non-profit community development style financial institutions already making loans and equity investments to fisheries businesses. CEI and the coalition would partner with NFWF in raising and leveraging capital, targeting specific investment opportunities, deploying the money, and tracking the impacts of the capital. At the end of the project, NFWF’s Board will decide on the adoption of the plan based on its mission-fit with current grant-making protocols and by the projected need (market demand) for additional capital to strengthen sustainable fishing practices.
