    CEI’s 34th Annual Meeting Breakfast

    Keynote Speaker:

    Gus Schumacher

Executive Vice President of Wholesome Wave, Bridgeport, CT
Former administrator of USDA Foreign Agriculture, and Undersecretary for Farm and Foreign Services.

Our 2012 annual meeting will focus on access to local, healthy foods. We see in our communities and in the news that many Mainers don’t have enough, and CEI is doing its part to change that.

Quoted in this New York Times excerpt, Schumacher said: “’When Wal-Mart makes a major effort to reach out to local food systems, it’s a major signal.’ [Schumacher] is a consultant to the nonprofit Kellogg Foundation and a former Massachusetts commissioner of food and agriculture, who has worked to introduce farmers to restaurateurs and retailers since the 1980s.”

    Chef Nischan

Chef Nischan will speak about the work that his organization, Wholesome Wave, has done that demonstrates strong demand for healthy food in underserved communities. Wholesome Wave’s new Healthy Food Commerce Initiative (HFCI) directs capital and business development assistance to expand regional food infrastructure.  HFCI aims to expand distribution channels for local healthy food, making it easier to 'source local' while supporting regional farmers & producers and stimulating your regional economy.
